New laws are hitting the books each year and 2019 is not exception.  This year we see a couple of new laws go into effect in California for ridesharing services, especially around the Uber or Lyft driver.  These new laws are design to make the ridesharing services more reliable, safer, and cleaner.

Starting January 1, 2019, SB-1014 Ride-hailing Vehicles goes into law.  This law requires Uber or Lyft drivers to maintain a cleaner car with higher emissions standards.  The two companies will have to increase the number of zero-emission vehicles on their platforms and do more to encourage passengers to pool their rides.

The hope is that this law will help to decrease the pollutants in the air as well as reduce the number of vehicles on the road that contribute to lower air quality.

In addition, AB-2886 Ride-hailing Drivers states that the apps provided by these companies will be required to display the driver’s name, picture, and image of the car along with the license plate number.  The goal is to make the services safer, and give consumers more confidence about their driver. It also provides more documentation in case of emergency or accident. If you or anyone you know is ever involved in an Uber or Lyft car accident, it’s important to know the facts and your rights.  Always consult an attorney before speaking with any insurance company.  If you are not sure what to do once you’ve been in a ridesharing accident, then stay calm and be sure everyone is okay first.  Get any medical help needed and document everything. Take picture if you can, then contact a lawyer to help answer your questions.
