I am injured after a car accident and have no car. What can I do? Separate three immediate needs: safe medical care, transportation to appointments, and a plan for the damaged vehicle. Ask your health plan and auto insurer what assistance is available, get any rental authorization in writing, and keep receipts. An open injury claim does not automatically provide a rental car or pay every travel expense.
For many Southern California households, losing a vehicle disrupts work, school pickups, and treatment at the same time. You should not have to choose a transportation plan while guessing what insurance will reimburse. Start by identifying what you need this week and who can actually authorize each service.
Make medical safety the first decision
Use 911 for an emergency; do not wait for an adjuster to approve transportation. Tell your treating professional if pain, dizziness, medication, or another limitation affects driving. After a concussion, the CDC recommends asking for written guidance about returning to activities such as driving and work. A rental vehicle is not a safe solution if you cannot safely operate it.
For nonemergency appointments, tell the clinic early that you lack transportation. Ask whether it has a patient navigator, social worker, or information about available programs. If you must reschedule, explain why and ask about medically appropriate alternatives. Ask your health plan about appointment transportation
Eligible Medi-Cal members may have transportation options for covered services. California DHCS distinguishes ordinary nonmedical transportation from nonemergency medical transportation, such as a wheelchair van when a medical condition prevents ordinary travel. Eligibility and authorization requirements apply; medically necessary specialized transport requires provider involvement.
Call your managed care plan’s member-services number and describe the appointment and mobility needs. If you have fee-for-service Medi-Cal, ask your provider or DHCS how to arrange assistance. Request help early, ask about scheduling and return trips, and confirm the arrangement. These benefits are not a general replacement for a car used for errands or commuting.
Check rental coverage before committing to a bill
The California Department of Insurance explains that rental reimbursement is optional coverage for a rental during repairs after a covered accident. Check whether you purchased it and ask about daily and total limits, eligible dates, and direct billing versus reimbursement. Your own rental coverage is different from asking another driver’s insurer to pay.
When seeking payment from the other insurer, ask what it has accepted and authorized before relying on reimbursement. Do not assume every rate, extra fee, or rental day will be paid. Keep transportation and repair records together
- Rental agreements, receipts, and written approval or denial messages.
- Repair estimates, inspection dates, and updates from the repair facility.
- Towing and storage notices, including where the vehicle is held.
- Appointment-related ride receipts and the purpose of each trip.
- Notes about mobility needs and alternatives you asked about.
Clarify storage charges promptly rather than leaving the vehicle’s location unresolved. Keep records of reasonable steps you took to manage expenses, but do not authorize unsafe repairs or drive a damaged vehicle merely to reduce a bill. Ask the repair professional about roadworthiness. Receipts document spending; they do not by themselves prove another party must reimburse it.
Do not overlook treatment bills and missed work
Maintain a separate folder for medical bills while your claim is pending. If injuries restrict your work, preserve pay records and medical restrictions using our lost-wages checklist.
